Sherman was born in 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, near the banks of the Hocking River. His father, Charles Robert Sherman, a successful lawyer who sat on the Ohio Supreme Court, died unexpectedly in 1829. He left his widow, Mary Hoyt Sherman, with eleven children and no inheritance. Alfred Rolf (1844-?), son of Benjamin and Ann (Allen) Rolf from Upper Town in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, was a blacksmith by trade On April 17, 1863, he married Bridget Quinn and had a son, John. On October 21, 1863, in Cleveland, Ohio, he enlisted in Company B, 32nd Ohio Volunteers, 17th Army Corps, Army of the Tennessee, under General James B. McPherson.
